Want something more personal?
The Breaksea Girl is available for private charter. When chartering you can have as many days and nights as you like, you tell us where you want to go, and for how long.  We cater for passenger numbers 2 up to 12 plus crew, and can be away for up to 21 days.

Charter rate on request. We do not run one day trips.

We have been working towards becoming carbon neutral over the last 6 years by planting 100's of native trees on land we have purchased in the heart of Manapouri.  This land has been set aside as a reserve.

A percentage of our profits plus donations from passengers goes into a research fund which we established 12 years ago.

Our business is based on environmental protection, and education is a key component to our trips.

There is a  strong emphasis on nature and conservation, and we are actively involved in many local and national conservation groups, including the Sustainable Business Network.

As our passengers are becoming more aware of their carbon footprint we have our own native re vegetation project in Manapouri which is funded through our business.

Additional to this we have operated a Research Fund for 12 years which has assisted many scientists and students working in Fiordland, and the sub Antarctic islands. Over $350,000.00 of financial and logistical support has been  made available to scientists and students, not only for field work but also to purchase equipment.

We are involved in research projects such as ...
Monitoring populations of weevils, skinks, albatross, dolphins and seals, marine research, dolphin work, DNA work  with whales, predator eradication, re-forestation and work with New Zealand native birds.

Over $80,000 has been donated from our passengers in support of the Pomona Island restoration project, see link to their site.

An eco-tourism business based in Doubtful Sound, Fiordland, New Zealand. Lance and Ruth own and operate the 20 metre motor-sailing yacht Breaksea Girl.

Our live aboard cruises, which have an emphasis on nature, conservation and research, cover all of Fiordland, Stewart Island and Sub-Antarctic Islands.

Lance and Ruth, both active conservationists with maritime qualifications, offer you a true natural history, eco-tourism experience.

Recognised as one of the leading eco-tourism businesses in New Zealand, our emphasis is on environmental protection, education and research funded though tourism.

Lance, your skipper, has over the last 27 years worked with the New Zealand Department of Conservation, Jacques Cousteau, David Bellamy, National Geographic, Natural History film units and scientists from all over the world.  When Lance has time off  David will be your skipper.

David has been a ships master for many years all over the world.
Now, being semi-retired he is just part time at sea.  He has a degree in Physical Geography, and has a broad but not deep understanding of the Fiordland ecology.  His interests include kayaking, mountain biking and the production olive oil.

Both Lance and Ruth have extensive experience working with people of all ages having been employed in the tourism industry prior to forming their own business 15 years ago. All activities non-extractive, therefore we employ a no fishing policy.

Included activities are:
Penguin watching, tramping, photography, snorkeling, diving, marine mammal watching, bird watching, research, visiting historical sites and forest walks. Fiordland Ecology Holidays have a Marine Mammal Watching permit which allows you to swim with seals if the opportunity arises.

We also hold a Dept of Conservation Concession which permits us to take guided walks ashore in the National Park. Breaksea Girl has  all the required marine certificates and is fully surveyed.

Enquires are welcomed from disabled or elderly, and special diets are catered for. Breaksea Girl is the only charter yacht based in Doubtful Sound, Fiordland.

You have the opportunity to Join a scheduled cruise or charter the Breaksea Girl for your own use with Lance as your skipper, or you could join one of our research trips and have the opportunity to work alongside scientists.

We carry a maximum of 12 passengers plus crew, schedule trips are restricted to 10 passengers plus crew. Wet suits and snorkel gear is available for your use on board. For divers, tanks, weight belts and weights are on board.

Special conditions apply to divers. We have a no fishing policy  and all diving is non extractive. Our crew are trained in accident and emergency procedures and we carry extensive safety equipment.
